Sashiko is a traditional practical art form using a simple running stitch to decorate and sandwich clothing and quilts. Today it has evolved into surface embellishment, with the thread pulled through only the top layer, rather than through all three layers of a quilt sandwich. Sashiko can stand alone or dramatically complement pieced or appliqued quilts. The beauty of sashiko is its simplicity: A humble running stitch can outline the most intricate design. I use traditional Japanese geometrics and Kamon crests in my quits but am continually discovering new twists to this old art form.
Paradise Stitched incorporates traditional Japanese designs in the projects section and samples of Sylvia's favorites for inspiration so you can design your own quilts.

Sylvia encourages her readers to experiment with different applique techniques because each method has something specific to offer. For example, paper piecing works well for precise geometric  shapes, while needle-turn applique is great for big free form shapes or Hawaiian quilts. The heat resistant press-over Mylar method offers an easy way to form crisp intricate shapes ready to applique down. Quilters who find hand applique intimidating or frustrating can easily master the Mylar method. ther metods
All the applique patterns in this book can also be adapted to machine uusing fusible adhesive.

Sylvia Pippen's mother Kitty Pippen taught her to sew at an early age. Her quilts took on a tropical twist when she moved to Hawaii.
