Details: Combine sashiko techniques with wool or cotton for strikingly realistic dimension in your hand appliqued and embellished flowers.

I am very excited about teaching for MISA at their new Tanque Verde location!
Madeline Island School of the Arts operates its winter workshops at the Tanque Verde Ranch in the beautiful Rincon Mountains of southern Arizona. The Ranch has recently been ranked #8 in Top Ten Resorts in the USA and #1 in Top Resorts in Texas and the Southwest by Conde Nast Traveler. The Ranch is located 30 minutes from the Tucson Airport at 14301 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85748.

Tanque Verde Ranch
is one of America’s old time cattle and guest ranches. Located on 60,000 acres of Tucson’s most breathtaking desert landscapes, nestled amongst the Rincon Mountains and adjacent to Saguaro National Park and Coronado National Forest.
The breathtaking views of the Arizona desert landscape, fabulous sunsets and warm climate provide ideal opportunities for photography and plein air painting. Spacious studios offer sweeping desert and mountain views to inspire quilters and writers.

Discover how to combine sashiko, a traditional Japanese running stitch, with wool or cotton hand appliqued flowers. Work with wool and create realistic dimensional flowers embellished with simple embroidery stitches or 3 cotton applique techniques to easily pre-form turned edge shapes. Explore how to translate photos and drawings into effective sashiko designs and how to combine them with applique. Develop your own design or work with one of Sylvia's many floral designs.

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embellishment using a running stitch of heavy white cotton on indigo fabric. We will cover sashiko techniques, how to easily transfer designs onto dark fabric, the best fabric and thread options for Sashiko, techniques for perfect stitch length, curves and corners. Bring photographs or drawings of foliage and learn how to develop them into an effective sashiko design.
For appliquéd flowers, you can work with wool, cotton or both! I will demonstrate how to select and fussy cut fabrics to create dimensional flowers both with wool and cotton. You can create your own design or work with my flower patterns. We will work with design boards and explore design concepts such as asymmetry, repetition, movement, and balance.
Working with wool, learn what threads and needles to use to whipstitch applique and the best threads and embroidery stitches to embellish your flowers to make them appear dimensional.
Working with cotton, learn the Postage Label , Apliquick, and Heat resistant Mylar appliqué methods. All methods create perfectly pre-formed shapes, ready to appliqué down. Learn the invisible appliqué stitch, how to make sharp points, smooth concave and convex curves, and how to add simple embroidery embellishment. The fine points of finishing and quilting will be demonstrated.
