Learn how to judge your stitch length to make even stitches, perfect points, curves, and geometric designs. Explore traditional and innovative ways to use sashiko in your quilts.

Workshop includes a packet of sashiko designs.

Designing with Sashiko & Appliqué

2-5 days

Translate your ideas into an original quilt design combining sashiko and appliqué. No drawing experience needed! We will work from photographs of your favorite flowers, drafting tools and overlays of tracing paper. Learn how capture the essence of a flower, find the best aspect, simplify shapes for appliqué, and choose fabric to give your flowers dimension. Discover how to outline intricate shapes with sashiko to complement your appliqué.

Hand Appliqué Techniques

1-2 days

Take a simple flower shape and find just the right fabric to fussy cut to make it look realistic and dimensional.
Pre-form your flower with the press-over heat resistant Mylar method and add more depth and shading with fabric paint, markers, watercolor pencils.
Learn all about applique threads, needles, and how to make invisible stitches.

Hand Sashiko and Appliqué
2 days

Make a tropical wall quilt and choose your favorite color scheme; hibiscus grow in almost every color except blue. Heliconias are dramatic pendulous flowers ranging in colors from hot pink , yellow to deep red or orange.

Tropical Waves 24½” x 41”

Hand Sashiko and Appliqué
2 days

This quilt uses scattered wave motifs and diagonal schools of fish to pull your eye through the picture. Five traditional Japanese kamon wave variations are worked with sashiko thread on indigo and then appliquéd in circles onto a graduated background.
Create your own variation! Sashiko circles and fish are formed before appliquéing them down, giving you a chance to experiment with placement.

· Add embroidery embellishment with a few simple stitches.
· Fold, cut and baste a graceful curved border to frame your quilt.
· Finishing tips and techniques: how to sandwich, baste and mark geometric designs for quilting.

Learn how to fold and cut a leaf and flower motif in eighths, to baste it down and needle-turn appliqué. Sandwiching and echo quilting will be demonstrated.
